As empires spread throughout, they comprised a large and diverse population which could be challenging to rule and administer.  Thus, rulers attempted to legitimize their power to show they were in charge through various means including religion, art, or monumental architecture.

Since the dawn of civilization, religion has played an important role in unifying people under the same belief system.  This role held true throughout the 15th-18th century, but schisms emerged that challenged this historical role of religion as conflicts broke out within Christianity and Islam.
