  • Byzantine emperor who reconquered much of the Italian territory previously ruled by Rome
  • initiated an ambitious building program, including Hagia Sofia
  • established a new legal code, the Code of Justinian
  • empire and he personally suffered from a plague now called the Plague of Justinian

  • Frankish king who built an empire in Europe greater than any known since ancient Rome and introduced the feudalism system to Europe
  • saw forced religious conversion as a way to strengthen his kingdom while increasing the membership of the church
  • crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III in 800 strengthening church/state relationship in western Europe
  • had monasteries open schools to educate future monks and government officials
